A Tale of Redemption and Dark Elves

Well, I can’t believe I’m here.

When I started this little fan project, I intended it to be closet fiction I stuffed in a drawer that never saw the light of day. I was reading R. A. Salvatore’s Drizzt series (which I highly recommend) and falling more and more in love with Dark Elves (known as drow).

Let me back up. I’m not in love with drow, per se. If you know anything about this fantasy race you know they are inherently evil, and I do not love what is evil about them. What I do love about drow society and culture is the rich and ripe soil for redemption stories. Battles against darkness, struggles against conscience, questions about the nature of humanity. These are the themes that drew me deeper and deeper into my obsession with the Underdark’s most fearsome stalkers.

And then I had an idea. See, Drizzt is a phenomenal character. I’m a huge fangirl, and I love the works of R.A. Salvatore. But Drizzt was born good. He was born exceptional, and while I love him for it, there was a different story my heart was yearning for.

The story I was hungry for is the story of a drow who was not born special but learned to become special. I wanted to read about light finding a way into the darkest of caverns, ransoming one who otherwise would have lived and died never knowing that wickedness was not the same as goodness.

And that’s how I met Rismyn, a little drow boy who is destined to do one thing; live and serve and die for his mother’s ambitions. And that’s how I met Kitty, a desolate half-elf girl, stolen from her home on the surface and dragged underground to shine light in a dark place.

The story of Forsaken by Shadows is a dark tale; it deals with themes of slavery, abuse, and cruelty. But it is also a redemption tale, a story of how goodness and light are working even in the darkest of circumstances. And, it is a love story, because healing is often borne on the wings of love.

Inspired by the work of R.A. Salvatore, this redemption tale is set in Dungeons and Dragons' Forgotten Realms setting. 

As a child, Kitty knew nothing but love and happiness from her family, but all of that changed the night of the Dark Elf raid. Now orphaned and enslaved to cavern-dwelling drow, she must fight to hold onto the light within her or suffer a fate worse than death. 

​Meanwhile, Rismyn knows nothing of love, born the second son of drow nobility. Until he stumbles upon the half-elf slave girl that his brother captured on the Surface. Now everything he has been raised to believe is being challenged, and he must choose between what is right and what is drow.
